Disk Utility User Guide
I know this is thread is old, but I was experiencing the same problem on my Macbook Pro on El Capitan. Using OmniDiskSweeper was awesome but I found the high quality transcoded media files from Final Cut Pro X were massive, so I did a huge project clean up and it gave me an extra 200gb of free space. You can restore a volume from another volume. When you restore from one volume to another volume, an exact copy of the original is created. Download os x yosemite 10 10 beta 2.
WARNING: When you restore one volume to another, all the files on the destination volume are erased. Before you restore a volume, copy any files on the destination volume that you want to save to a different volume.
Mac Pro Video
- In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, choose View > Show All Devices.
- In the sidebar, select the volume you want to restore, then click the Restore button .This is the volume that is erased and becomes the exact copy.
- Click the Restore pop-up menu, then choose the volume you want to copy.
- Click Restore, then click Done.
You can also use Disk Utility in macOS Recovery to restore a volume. See the Apple Support article About macOS Recovery.

So my original problem started with the flashing question folder at startup on my daughter's Macbook Pro model a1278. Long story short, I can now start it from an external HD but when I check disk utilities the internal Macintosh HD doesn't show its name but it looks like there's some type of connection. Hype pro 3 6 8.

What does this mean and how do I fix it? It came up during safe boot which I used because I have the gray screen with apple logo and waiting that won't let me log all the way onto the computer.
